Hey, I'm Jamie!

As the owner of a small business, it’s important to have a strong online presence, which means you need to be on social media. But there are so many social media platforms that it can be hard to decide which one to use. The people who use, and the features and goals of, each social media platform are different. Choosing the right platform for your small business can help you reach your target audience and reach your social media goals. We’ll talk about the things you should think about when choosing a social media platform for your small business in this blog.

Before you choose one or several social media platforms for your business, you need to know what you want to achieve. What do you want to get out of being on social media? Do you want more people to know about your brand, more people to visit your website, more leads, or more sales? Which social media platforms are best for your business will depend on your goals. For example, if your goal is to get more people to know about your brand, you might want to focus on visual platforms like Instagram or Pinterest.

When choosing which social media platform to use, it’s important to know who your target audience is. Different groups of people use different social media sites. For instance, if most of the people you want to reach are older adults, you might want to focus on Facebook. If your business is geared toward young adults, TikTok might be better for you. If you know who you want to reach on social media, you can choose a platform that will connect with them and help you reach your goals.

When choosing a social media platform, it’s also important to think about the kind of content you want to make. Content on different platforms comes in different mediums like pictures, videos, stories, or live streaming. For example, TikTok might be the best platform for you if you want to make short, snappy videos. YouTube might be a better choice if you want to make longer videos or webinars. If you know what kind of content you want to make, you can choose a platform that will help you with your content strategy.

Different parts of each social media platform can help you reach your goals. For example, Facebook has a powerful advertising platform that can help you reach a wider audience. Instagram has tools like Instagram Reels that can help you make videos that people will want to watch. Twitter has a lot of users and is known for its updates and hashtags that happen in real time. Taking a look at the features of each platform will help you choose one that fits with your goals and content strategy.

Reach is another important thing to think about when choosing a social media platform. Some platforms have more people using them and reach more people than others. For example, Facebook is the biggest social media platform because it has more than 2.8 billion active users. LinkedIn, on the other hand, has fewer users but is known for its opportunities for professional networking. When you know how far each platform can reach, you can choose one that will help you reach your target audience.

You can also choose the right platform by looking at how your competitors use social media. Look at the social media profiles of your competitors to find out which platforms they are using. Are they active on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram? Do they make videos for YouTube or for TikTok? By looking at what your competitors are doing on social media, you can figure out which platforms work best for your business and stay ahead of them.

Now that we’ve talked about what to think about when choosing a social media platform for your small business, let’s look at some of the most popular platforms and what they have to offer.

TikTok:

TikTok is a website that is known for its short, trendy videos. It’s a great platform for businesses that want to make videos that younger people will find interesting and want to reach them. TikTok’s advertising platform is still in its early stages compared to some others, but businesses can reach their target audience by partnering with influencers or running sponsored content. I personally think TikTok allows you to grow the fastest.

Facebook:

Facebook has more than 2.8 billion active users, making it the biggest social media site. It’s a great platform for businesses that want to raise awareness of their brand, drive traffic to their website, and get leads. Facebook’s advertising platform is also one of the most powerful because it lets businesses target people based on their age, gender, interests, and even how they act. Facebook is known for being flexible because it lets you share pictures, videos, stories, and even live streams. Facebook’s Groups feature can also help businesses connect with their customers and build communities.

Instagram:

Instagram is a picture-sharing site that young adults like to use. It’s a great place for businesses to show off their goods or services in a visual way. Features on Instagram, like Instagram Reels and IGTV, can help businesses make interesting videos. Instagram’s advertising platform is also useful because it lets businesses reach people with specific interests and demographics. But Instagram’s algorithm can make it hard for businesses to reach their audience naturally, and it can be expensive to advertise on the platform.

Twitter:

Twitter is known for its real-time updates and hashtags. It’s a great place for businesses to talk with each other and keep up with news and trends in their field. Twitter is also a great place for businesses that want to connect with thought leaders and people who have a lot of influence in their field. Twitter’s advertising platform is cheap, and businesses can use it to reach people with specific interests and demographics.

LinkedIn:

LinkedIn is a great place for B2B businesses to connect with other businesses. It’s a great place for businesses that want to connect with other businesses and professionals in their field. The advertising platform on LinkedIn works well because it lets businesses target specific jobs, industries, and interests. Through LinkedIn Pulse, the site’s publishing platform, businesses can also show off their expertise and thought leadership on LinkedIn.

YouTube:

YouTube is a platform for sharing videos that works well for businesses that want to make longer-form videos or webinars. YouTube is the second biggest search engine, after Google. This makes it a great place for businesses that want to show up more in search results. The advertising platform on YouTube is also useful because it lets businesses target specific groups and interests.

Pinterest:

You may not think about Pinterest as being a social media platform you need on be on but it is. Pinterest technically is a search engine. Nailing SEO and keywords on this platform can drive traffic to you website faster than any other platform! In my opinion, every business should be on Pinterest!

I hope you found this information useful! At the end of the day there isn’t a hard “right or wrong” platform to be on, and it may take some trial and error to see which one may be best for you to find your audience.  Hopefully you can take some of these tips and implement them for yourself! Good luck! 🙂
